Please note Irlen Syndrome Services are not within the standard scope of Speech Pathology Practice. Irlen training is open to Allied Health and Education Professionals but is not standard practice in Speech Pathology. Rebecca has sought additional training to support people in her community to overcome Irlen related barriers that may impede literacy development, learning and behaviour.
Rebecca is a passionate and dynamic Irlen Screener. Rebecca is now a non-practicing Irlen Diagnostician (no longer determines appropriateness for Irlen Spectral Filters), so she can focus more on provision of Speech Pathology Services.

Headaches? Migraines? Light and Glare Sensitivity? Eyestrain?
Maybe you are affected by Scotopic Sensitivity Irlen Syndrome. Over 30 years of research has shown that symptoms of Headaches and Migraines can be reduced with the use of Irlen Spectral Filters. These are individually tailored coloured lenses that filter out the types of light spectrums which an individual’s brain finds difficult to process. There are almost limitless combinations to reduce perceptual stress and light sensitivity!

To see if this technology can help you, complete the self assessment survey at:
http://www.irlen.com/long-self-test-for-irlen-syndrome and read the information at http://www.irlen.com.
Difficulty reading? Make lots of errors copying from the board?
Slow and inconsistent hand writing? Simple spelling and math errors?
Had trouble learning times tables?

If these symptoms are common for you or your child, investigating whether Visual Perceptual difficulties are holding your family back may be a good investment. Have you ever noticed print going blurry, extra light on the page, poor spacing between letters and words, print wriggling, spots on the page or walls, difficulty remembering what you have read? Does reading make you restless, frustrated or sleepy? These are all symptoms of Scotopic Sensitivity Irlen Syndrome.

History of Irlen
Ms.Helen Irlen discovered Scotopic Sensitivity Irlen Syndrome in the 1980’s through a Federally Funded Research Grant to support children and adults with reading and learning disabilities. Ms. Irlen then went on to identify that a sub group of people could improve their reading and learning abilities with the application of coloured overlays. Ms Irlen continued her research and developed screening and diagnostic assessments to identify Irlen Syndrome and tinted overlays and lenses which filter out the types of light these individual’s brains do not like to process. These overlays and filters have become known as Irlen Overlays and Irlen Spectral Filters. Helen Irlen, MA, LMFT is the Founder & Executive Director of the Irlen Institute International Headquarters.

Echuca Speech Pathology and Dyslexia Services
Echuca Speech Pathology and Dyslexia Services provides Irlen Screening Assessments; the first step in assessment for Irlen Coloured Lenses. If required, Reading and Spelling Assessments can also be undertaken at the clinic. If at the Irlen Screening Assessment a person tests positive to Irlen Syndrome, they will be referred to an Irlen Diagnostic Clinic. As of 31.03.2015, Echuca Moama Speech Pathology and Dyslexia Clinic chose not to be an Irlen Diagnostic Clinic, hence coloured glasses are not available through the clinic.
Irlen Syndrome is a remediable learning disability that can be significantly improved with the Irlen Method. The Irlen method uses two main types of intervention: Irlen Coloured Overlays (coloured plastics provided at the Irlen Screening Assessment if required) and Irlen Spectral Filters (coloured glasses provided at the Diagnostic Assessment). The Irlen Method is not a learning program and targeted intervention may be required to fill learning gaps once appropriate assessments are completed.
